Surankote:Shopkeepers across Surankote  markets have unilaterally increased the price of vegetables, fruit and other commodities by their will, raising eyebrows from the public.

Locals told Greater Now that shopkeepers in Surankote markets have increased the rates upon their free will.

In comparison to other districts of the UT of J&K the rates of basic essential commodities in the holy month of Ramadan are skyrocketing while no pandemic-related problems, shortage or other possible circumstances could be taken into consideration as potential reasons. Not only are the escalating prices limited to poultry and other dairy products but concerning fruits and vegetables as well.

This sad state of affairs is creating enough complications for the common people of the Tehsil. The administration and civil society seem to be in deep slumber with regard to the problem and no solution could be seen approaching anything soon.

As a matter of fact, the chicken broiler dressed price in every District of UT of J&K is average Rs 150 whereas in Surankote Tehsil it is from 230-250. Same is the case with other food items, vegetables, fruits etc.

Meanwhile, locals have demanded market checking should be intensified in the area and those vendors selling vegetables and other essential commodities at exorbitant rates should be taken to task.

The general public also appealed to the newly appointed Deputy Commissioner Poonch to issue price lists so that prices are determined and authoritarian behaviour of sellers is checked at earliest so that common masses will not face any hardships due to exorbitant rates.
