Landslide damages 15 shops, 3 houses in Central Kashmir

Ganderbal 17 July:Property worth lakhs was destroyed due to landslides in a Kangan village of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal District.   Official sources told Greater Now that there was a landslide and soil erosion which damaged shops and houses in Gonibagh area of Kangan on Srinagar-Leh Highway. 


The Srinagar-Leh highway was also closed due to landslides.    The Soil erosion and landslides occurred during wee hours on Friday. Eyewitnesses said that a large number of trees were also destroyed by the landslides.  

Meanwhile DDC Shafqat Iqbal and SSP Ganderbal also visited landslide hot areas of kangan and took stock of the situation. 

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kangan, Hakim Tanvir told Greater Now that earth caved in after there was a landslide in Gonibagh area, 7 kilometers away from Kangan town.

He said that 15 shops and 3 houses were damaged in the incident. The SDM also added that fortunately there was no loss of life in the incident. “Men and machinery have been pressed into service to clear the debris and Road will be thrown open shortly”.
