MHA suspends Basant Rath, ask him not to leave JK without permission of J&K DGP

Srinagar, Jul 08: Central Government’s Ministry Of Home Affairs (MHA) has placed under suspension a senior police officer of the IGP rank Basant Rath on charges of misconduct with immediate effect.

According to an order issued from the Ministry of Home Affairs Basant Rath has been directed to remain headquartered in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir only and asked not to leave the headquarter without the prior and proper permission of Director General Jammu and Kashmir Police.

IPS officer Basant Rath had recently written a letter in which he expressed apprehension about his safety due to “certain activities” of the Jammu and Kashmir Police chief.

In his complaint, the 2000 batch IPS officer asked the police to take cognizance of “threats to his life and liberty” which he alleged were given to him by the top cop.

“I am writing to you to take note of my genuine apprehensions about my safety and reputation. I am not asking you to lodge an FIR against the person mentioned above [DGP Dilbag Singh]. I am just asking you to make this letter a part of the daily dairy in your station. Today, now. In case something bad happens to me, you should know whose number to dial,” IPS Basant Rath mentioned in the letter he wrote to the Gandhi Nagar Police Station SHO.

The letter had gone viral on social media, triggering a controversy. (PTK)
